Do I Need to Worry About the PSTN Switch-Off Delay? - Babble
3:33

In a recent announcement that will come as welcome news to many, the planned switch-off of the UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) has been delayed until 2027. This extension provides businesses and households with additional time to prepare for the transition to digital phone systems.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is the primary technology replacing the PSTN. It allows voice communication to be transmitted over the internet instead of traditional copper phone lines.

While this delay offers some respite, it’s important to remember that the PSTN is nearing the end of its life. Procrastinating the switch could lead to potential disruptions when the final deadline arrives. In fact, other legacy services are being phased out even sooner, with some providers ceasing service as early as August 2024. For example, many businesses rely on traditional phone lines for critical systems such as lifts, alarms, and door entry systems – which are all part of this switch off.

Originally scheduled for December 2025, the decision to postpone the switch-off was made due to the complexities of upgrading the entire network. This additional time will allow for a smoother transition, particularly for vulnerable customers.

What Does This Mean for You?

While the deadline has been extended, most businesses and individuals should still aim to switch to a new service immediately.

By making the switch early to a modern digital phone system like those offered by us, you can benefit from:

  • Improved call quality: Experience crystal-clear calls with advanced VoIP technology, ensuring seamless communication with clients, colleagues, and loved ones.
  • Faster broadband speeds: Many packages bundle phone services with increased broadband speeds, allowing you to enjoy faster internet access alongside your new phone system.
  • Flexible packages: Ditch the one-size-fits-all approach. Choose from packages tailored to your specific needs, whether you’re a small business, a growing enterprise, or a household with specific communication requirements.

Additionally, it’s essential to consider other services that rely on traditional phone lines, such as alarm systems, entry systems, or lifts. These may require upgrades or alternative solutions as part of the transition to a digital phone system.
